COMMERCIAL FISHING VESSEL DOCKSIDE SAFETY EXAM
To help avoid loss of valuable fishing time, costly fines, and ensure the safety of the vessel’s crew, commercial fishing vessel owners/operators are encouraged to get a courtesy fishing vessel safety dockside exam. The U.S. Coast Guard is currently providing courtesy dockside safety exams to help ensure that all of the required safety equipment on board is in serviceable condition. The dockside exam is done as a service to the commercial fishing industry and is not intended to be a law enforcement or termination measure. Any discrepancies are provided to the owner/operator in the form of a work list. In the event that discrepancies are found, a follow-up exam can be scheduled once all items on the worklist are corrected. Vessels found to have all required equipment are issued a USCG Safety Decal. This decal indicates to any future Coast Guard boarding personnel that the vessel has been examined for all of its safety equipment. Obtaining a safety decal can save time during a Coast Guard law enforcement boarding and greatly reduce the risk of any violation citations or having the vessel’s voyage be terminated. To request a FREE dockside exam from a CFV Examiner near you please fill out this form and click “SUBMIT DOCKSIDE SAFETY EXAM REQUEST“.
The Coast Guard has created a new web-based tool that was designed to help inform commercial fishermen of the equipment they are required to have onboard their vessels in order to successfully be issued a Commercial Fishing Vessel Safety Decal. After requesting a dockside safety examination, we kindly ask that you try this Safety Equipment Checklist Generator which is available online by clicking here.
As a newly developed tool, your feedback of this is greatly important to us so that we may incorporate your comments into future improvements. Please feel free to e-mail us at [email protected] to share your experience.
